Ski-Mountaineering in Chilean Patagonia

We ran this expedition in Autumn 2003. We may schedule it again in future. In the meantime we could set up a private departure with sufficient interest.

With this ski-touring expedition we are offering an exciting new itinerary to the remote central part of the Northern Patagonian ice cap. Here we will climb San Valentin 4058m, the highest peak in Patagonia. This is a very challenging itinerary that will take us to the middle of a 5000 square kilometre ice cap at the other end of the world. We will certainly be escaping from the crowds.

After flying to Coyhaique in southern Chile and travelling on to the Laguna San Rafael national park we will spend a couple of days hiking in the immediate area to warm up, enjoying the sunshine and soaking up some of the spectacular scenery. The mountain scenery in this part of the world is absolutely incredible.

We then begin the expedition in earnest by ascending the Glacier San Rafael onto the main Northern Patagonian Ice-cap and skiing to the remote peak of San Valentin 4058m. The approach will take about 5 or 6 days depending on conditions. The ascent is then a relatively straightforward day from a high camp at about 2700m. Other peaks in the area will be climbed if time and weather permit. After about fifteen days on the ice cap we  return to the Laguna San Rafael and Coyhaique for some well earned steaks and wine!
