Mountaineering in the Cordillera Blanca of Peru
Huascaran Sur 6746m, is the highest peak in the Cordillera Blanca and the highest peak in Peru. The mountain consists of two peaks; the north peak at 6655m is, at present, a slightly easier climb. In 2009 we are not running a trip solely to Huascaran, because there have been unreliable conditions in some years recently. However if you are keen to attempt Huascaran we are offering an 8 day extension to climb Huascaran combined with a longer trip to Peru to attempt either an ascent of Alpamayo, from 1-30 June 2009, or in combination with our Cordillera Blanca First Ascent from 4-30 June 2009.
There will be a rest day at our base in Huaraz after whichever previous expedition you are on. Then we will climb by the normal route up the west slopes of Huascaran from the village of Musho at approximately 3000m. It usually takes three days to reach the high camp in the col between the North and South peaks, known as La Garganta, at 6000m. We will then attempt both the South and the North peaks before spending two days descending to Musho. The most difficult part of the ascent is usually passing through the large icefall to reach the Garganta camp. Difficulties can vary from year to year quite considerably and from time to time the route is impassable. Above the col both summits are approximately alpine PD in standard, though in recent years the south peak has been the harder of the two.
For some more photos of the mountain see our Huascaran and Huascaran Norte information pages.
Please note that like all of our itineraries in the Cordillera Blanca this itinerary should be considered flexible and will divert to other peaks if Huascaran is in poor or dangerous condition. e.g. in both 2004 and 2006 Huascaran was in poor condition and was even 'officially' closed some of the season. Our most likely choice of alternative peak is Chopicalqui 6345m, the fifth highest in the Cordillera Blanca

Huascaran (on the left) and Copa from above Huaraz.
View Full Expedition Dossier This is an old dossier about our full 25 day Huascaran expedition that we ran until 2005. it is for reference only. At the present moment we don't have a full scheduled Huascaran expedition as featured in this dossier, however we do run our extension trips as above or we can set up a full Huascaran expedition for a private group.
