Classic Ski Mountaineering in the Andes between Mendoza and Bariloche.

See our Latest Photos page for photos from our 2009 Argentina Ski Explorer. In  three weeks of skiing we had 95% blue skies and no rain or storms. Just wine, spring snow and sunshine!

This new ski-mountaineering expedition is based around  the ski  itineraries which we ran to Argentina in 2006 and 2009. We'll travel to one of the countries with the best ski-touring in the Andes and pick the best areas. The expedition will take the form of  a road trip from Mendoza to Bariloche, stopping in several different areas to make ski ascents and do a few resort days as well. This trip is particularly suitable for those skiers who are new to ski touring, with little or no previous ski touring or mountaineering experience.

Our first mountain destination will be the small ski resort of Vallecitos in the Cordon del Plata where we will ski several peaks and have a warm up day on the pistes (if open). After a night back in Mendoza we will drive south to the major resort of Las Leñas, where again we will have several days skiing in the nearby mountains. In the event of poor weather  we may have another resort day here as well and customers are always welcome to choose a resort day option. Next on the agenda is a ski ascent of the 3978m high active volcano Volcan Tromen. Finally we travel further south to the city of Bariloche where we will ski a couple more peaks and have at least one day at the nearby resort of Cerro Catedral.

This itinerary will be deliberately kept flexible to make the best use of weather and snow conditions. The balance of time we spend in the different mountain venues and the choice of tour each day will depend on current snow and weather conditions, and particularly the state of the access roads.

A similar trip but generally with longer and harder days out skiing is our Chile Ski Mountaineer, which we have successfully run for many years.

Expedition members should be strong parallel or telemark skiers (skiing red runs very confidently). Previous touring experience is not necessary as this is a very straightforward ski-mountaineering itinerary. We will take our own touring skis and other equipment out to Argentina.
