INTRODUCTION TO THIS EXPEDITION

This expedition, running in November-December 2011, will be based in the remote Puna de Atacama of Argentina where we will make first ascents of a couple of  near 6000m peaks and also climb one of the highest peak in the Andes. Due to the unique nature of this expedition we do not provide specific details of the peaks involved on the web. Please call or email to discuss more generally what we are intending to do. A more detailed information sheet on the peaks we plan to climb will be available only after we receive a booking.

This is an area of the Andes we know well, having run many successful trips in the past fifteen years, including several previous successful "first ascents" trips. We have previously made first ascents of Baboso 6070m and Medusa Northeast 6046m as well as several high 5000m peaks such as Nacimiento del Jague with clients on expeditions in 1996, 1997, 2000 and 2010.

The expedition will fly out to the provincial city of Catamarca then move on to the small town of Fiambala, a sleepy place in an oasis of vineyards just a few hours drive from the mountains. After an initial acclimatisation phase of three days walking at about 3000-4000m in the Valle de Chaschuil we will drive into the high mountains. Our main mountain trip will be a 10 day expedition away from civilization, with a vehicle base camp and higher camps as necessary on our target peaks.

Most of the peaks in this part of the Andes involve no technical climbing. The ascents on this expedition are suitable for strong hillwalkers, though previous expedition experience is preferred due to the demanding weather and camping conditions. Please call or email if you have any questions about this trips suitability for you.

See our Firsts page for more details of the successful "first ascents" trips and other exploratory itineraries we have run over the years.
