Exploratory Mountaineering in Chilean Patagonia

With this exploratory climbing expedition we are offering an exciting new itinerary to some remote areas of  Central Patagonia, in the same areas we skied in October 2005. The main objectives will be to make first ascents of several peaks of 2000-2500m height, then  finish with a climb by the normal route to the summit of  San Lorenzo 3706m, the second highest peak in Patagonia. This is a very challenging itinerary that will take us into some very remote terrain at the other end of the world and far from the crowds.

After flying to Coihaique in southern Chile we will drive south towards Cochrane stopping at the peaceful wee village of Puerto Tranquilo for six days or so. From here we'll aim to climb one or two peaks of around 2000-2500m height, which we believe have never been climbed before. For obvious reasons we aren't revealing on this website exactly which peaks these are, but we believe, from close visual inspection, that the these ascents will be around Alpine PD to AD in grade. The ascents in this area will be mostly over two days, with a tough day through dense un-travelled forest to a high camp, then a somewhat more scenic summit day over glacier terrain, perhaps with some steeper snow and ice.

We then travel on to San Lorenzo which we approach from the north. In summer it's just a 4-5 hour walk to the hut at the edge of the forest from the end of the road, with horses to carry loads. The area is a beautifully forested pastoral landscape, backed by rugged mountains. It's also famous for being a good place to see pumas. The ascent of San Lorenzo from the hut is a relatively complex route over 2 or 3 days with a high camp at about 2400m. However it is not too difficult technically, with the hardest section being an ice-call at about PD/AD. Another peak in the area will be climbed if time and weather permit. After about six days in this remote area we'll return to Cochrane and then Coihaique for some well earned steaks and wine!

Expedition members should be experienced climbers ideally with some previous snow and ice climbing experience. A good standard of fitness is needed for this expedition.
