A unique opportunity to make a first ascent in the Cordillera Blanca with an optional extension to climb Huascaran

This new itinerary will run for the first time in 2009, but is based on explorations we made in 2008. It will take us to some of the most interesting and quieter parts of the Cordillera Blanca, Peru's greatest mountain range. It is possible to extend this itinerary by 8 days to climb Huascaran  6746m, the highest peak in the Cordillera Blanca and indeed Peru.  This itinerary will be particularly appealing to those who have climbed in the Cordillera Blanca before and want to travel to new areas of this beautiful mountain range.

Our main objective is to make one or two first ascents of new routes in the central part of the Cordillera Blanca. Having searched climbing records and the literature we are pretty sure these routes have not yet been climbed. We expect the climbing to be partly on easy glacier, partly on rock. The peaks the routes are on are approximately 5500m high. For obvious reasons we're not giving away too much information on the web, but further details will be sent on receipt of a booking form and deposit, or phone John on 01556 503929 to discuss the trip.

We'll also have time in the Blanca to make ascents of one or two other 5000m peaks, with our highest ascent likely to be the popular but scenic Pisco 5752m. Our expeditions to the Cordillera Blanca are based in the town of Huaraz situated at a height of 3100m at the foot of the mountains.

Please note that like all of our itineraries in the Cordillera Blanca this itinerary should be considered flexible and will divert to other peaks (of similar height and difficulty) if those we hope to climb are in poor condition in 2009. An alternative extension to climb another of the Blanca 6000er's such as Copa 6188m or Chopicalqui 6345m may also be possible, by arrangement, or may be necessary if Huascaran is in poor condition.

For those who wish to see more of the cultural side of Peru we can extend this expedition to allow time for a short tour of the famous city of Cuzco and the spectacular ruins of the lost city of Machu Picchu. For details and prices see our Cuzco and Machu Picchu extension page.

We have a long history of running successful exploratory and first ascents trip - see our Firsts page for a summary of recent activities.
