Alpine Mountaineering in Chile
This trip is not currently scheduled, however we can organise and run private trips for small groups, following this itinerary or something similar.
This expedition will be based in Santiago and will attempt a mixture of lower more technical peaks and the remote giant Juncal 5950m+ near the Argentine border. Santiago, the capital city of Chile, is a pleasant cosmopolitan city with a distinctly European flavour. There are plenty of good restaurants and pavement cafes and we will return to Santiago to enjoy these between our trips to the mountains.
From Santiago we will make a quick acclimatisation trip to climb some of the easy and accessible peaks in the Loma Larga range. Our objectives include peaks such as Loma Larga 5404m, Cortaderas 5197m, and Meson Alto 5257m. These peaks and others in the range present interesting routes generally on rock ridges. Peaks in the Loma Larga are mostly about PD to AD in standard
After a return to Santiago we will travel to the remote peak of Juncal which is over 5950m and may be as high as 6100m. The ascent of Juncal involves a long approach from the north up the Rio Juncal, possibly including several big river crossings, to reach a high camp at 4600m on the north-west slopes of the mountain. From here we plan to make the ascent in one long day, though we may opt for a higher camp. Juncal is pictured above in the background. The normal ascent route is to the left of the glacier and also involves a little more technical climbing at about Alpine PD/AD.
Clients for this expedition should have previous experience of Alpine climbing (or both summer and winter climbing in the UK) and be fit and capable in the mountains. Previous experience at high altitudes would also be an advantage.
