Easy Mountaineering in scenic northwest Argentina
This expedition is now full.
INTRODUCTION TO THIS EXPEDITION
This new expedition, running for the first time in November 2010, will be based in the remote northern Puna de Atacama of Argentina where our main objective will be to climb the peak of Nevado de Cachi, 6380m. It is an area we know form a previous visit there and attempt on the peak which was thwarted by bad weather. The whole of northwest Argentina is very scenic and laid back, and the valleys surrounding Nevado de Cachi are particularly beautiful, normally full of flowering cactuses at the time we visit.
The expedition will fly out via Buenos Aires to the provincial city of Salta. From Salta we'll make an initial acclimatisation trip to the area around the towns of San Antonio de los Cobres (at 3900m) and Olacapato. This is a dry and desert like area of the Puna de Atacama, with a number of mining settlements in the area. Here, after doing a couple of acclimatisation walks at 4500-5000m, we'll attempt two straightforward nearby peaks - Nevado Acay 5770m and Nevado Queva 6140m.
For the second phase of the expedition we will move to the small town of Cachi, a sleepy place in an oasis of vineyards just a short way from the mountains of the same name. From the road end at Las Pailas at about 3000m we will begin the trek into the mountains, taking 1½ or 2 days to reach a high camp at about 5400m below Nevado de Cachi. As usual we are expecting that summit day will be long and cold, but there is no technical climbing.
We have an optional extension to this expedition to climb the highest volcano in the world, and second highest peak in Argentina, Ojos del Salado, 6893m. This will take an extra 11 days, with a return to the UK on 3rd December. Further details in the Expedition Dossier and pictures of Ojos on our Ojos del Salado page
Most of the peaks in this part of the Andes involve no technical climbing - the ascents on this expedition are suitable for strong hillwalkers, though previous expedition experience is preferred due to the demanding weather and high-altitude camping conditions.
