Mountaineering in Bolivia

Climbing in some of the more remote valleys of the Cordillera Real, with an optional extension to climb Ancohuma

Bolivia is one of the most interesting and enjoyable destinations for a climbing trip to the Andes. Our 2009 Bolivia expedition will climb the highest peak in the Cordillera Real, and also climb in some of the most scenic and unfrequented areas. Highlight of the expedition will be the ascent of Illimani, which lies near La Paz which will take 5 days with a spectacular high camp above the glaciers. The mountain is usually a relatively easy snow climb though in some years there can be problems crossing the big crevasses. The expedition will go to Illimani after a program of ascents in the Cordillera Real when acclimatisation peaks of around 5000-5500m will be attempted.

Before travelling to Illimani we will spend seven days in the Khara Khota valley and around the very scenic Lechecota near the foot of Chachacomani in the central Cordillera Real. During this time we will make ascents of a number of peaks in the area such as Wila Llojeta 5244m, Janco Laya 5545m and Tres Marias, 5400m.

The expedition will be based in La Paz and we'll spend the first few days in and around this fascinating city until we get used to the thin air. The La Paz airport is higher than the summit of the Eiger!  During this time in La Paz we will arrange some optional sightseeing trips, including the pre-Inca ruins of Tiahuanaco and Lake Titicaca.

For those looking for a further high altitude challenge we have an option to stay on in Bolivia for six more days to attempt Ancohuma at the northern end of the Cordillera Real. We will require a minimum number of clients interested to run this extension at a good price.
